I don’t know about you but there’s something about the start of a brand new calendar year that gets me lifting my eyes again. A fresh hope, a new start, a renewed sense of wonder at the thought of all the Lord can achieve in this next season. Coming into the New Year causes me to pause and reflect on what has been but also causes me to reimagine, to envision and to enlarge my expectations.
At this time of year my mind is drawn to new stakes I must put in the ground. I’m always convinced there’s a better, stronger, more effective version of me waiting to get out! At this time of year I think again about the kind of husband I want to be, I’m convinced I can love my wife better. I’m convinced I can be a better father, a better brother, a better son, a better friend. I think about Jesus, His awesome grace for me and His willingness to lead me in every circumstance.
I’m convinced Father God has great plans yet to be discovered, that in Him there are even greater gifts for us yet to receive. I’m convinced there is so much God wants to bless us with. I’m convinced the church where I serve and the church where you serve can have its best year yet! I’m convinced there is grace to lift you higher in your faith and propel you into your best year yet. As we move swiftly into this new year know that He is already making a way, already going before us, already preparing each breakthrough moment.
I want to encourage you in this first month of 2019 to lift your heads and GO AGAIN!
The truth is the devil is a liar; worse than that he is the father of lies, lies are his seed designed to grow into robbing, stealing and destroying the God-joy set before us.
He would have you think, ‘I can’t go any further, I can’t follow Jesus any better, I can’t receive spiritual gifts’. He’d have you shrink back in thoughts of ‘God has abandoned me, my life is arbitrary, my dreams are laughable’. Even now declare in the name of Jesus, ‘Get behind me Satan.’ Believe that out of His abundance, this is going to be your best year yet.
We can proclaim with the assurance that God is the same yesterday, today and forever (Hebrews 13:8). Therefore, the same Jesus in the fire with Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego is the same Jesus in the fire with you. When it seems you’ll be devoured, the same God that made pussycats of lions in Daniels den is the very same God who is with you. The same Jesus that calmed the storm and stopped the disciples’ boat from sinking is the same Jesus in the boat with you this year. The same Jesus that called Peter out to walk on choppy water is the same Jesus that calls you this year to step out into the unknown to experience the impossible. The same Jesus who took hold of Peter’s hand as he started to sink into those choppy waters is the same Jesus who takes hold of your hand; even when you take your eyes off Him, He will never take His eye off you.
Strike the ground!
2 Kings 13
On his death bed Elisha said to the king of Israel, “Strike the ground.” The king struck the ground three times and then quit. Elisha became angry with him: “Why didn’t you hit the ground five or six times? Then you would beat Aram until he was finished. As it is, you’ll defeat him three times only.”
Elisha has been mentored, discipled, championed by Elijah. Elijah was used by God in awesome ways to do awesome signs and wonders declaring and demonstrating the power of God. Elijah was more than a mentor to Elisha, he was a father in the faith. Customary in those days was for sons to expect an inheritance that was double that which their fathers had inherited from their fathers. There was no material inheritance for Elisha to have, but there was a double portion of spiritual inheritance that God had prepared for him. In his life Elisha had learnt not to settle only for what he’d already seen God do in his mentors life. He knew that as a son in the ways of the Lord there was an inheritance to come. When his father/mentor died, Elisha didn’t say, “If I could just be half the man he was….’, he asked God for a double portion, a double anointing, double the impact! A double portion, he received.
I reckon one reason Elisha’s anger stirred that day was because he knew that Gods people are called to far more than simply winning in life once or twice. You see Elisha was the prophet of the double portion; such was his faith in God that it was frustrating to be around people with a lack faith expectation in what the limitless God of heaven could achieve.
THERE IS MORE!
But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship. Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba, Father.” So you are no longer a slave, but God’s child; and since you are his child, God has made you also an heir.
The Spirit of Jesus, the son of God, in your life proclaims that you are nolonger a slave to the world, but a child of God and since you are His child, you are His heir! Our inheritance is everything He is and everything He has promised! THERE IS MORE!
Jesus said, “…truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these…”
And so, please, son, daughter of the King of kings, will you press into your true identity and at least double your expectation of God at work in you and through you this year! At least double!
Elisha’s frustration with the king that day was not because there was a lack of obedience to the instruction but that there was a lack of faith in the obedience. This year, as we step out in obedience and service, let us hold to a new level of faithful expectation that He can do far more than we can ask or imagine.
Faithful expectation is prophetic. This is your inheritance to reign in life and to be more than a conqueror Strike the ground for every month of this year. Strike the ground for each family member. Strike the ground to receive every spiritual inheritance.
How do I strike the ground? Pray, pray and pray again. Seek God, seek God and seek God again. Ask of God, ask of God and ask of God again. Praise God, Praise God and praise God again. Speak faith, speak faith and speak faith again!
Human talent and human thinking can achieve some pretty good things, but we believe in a limitless God of infinite love and immeasurable power. Good is good but we can see GREAT and MIGHTY things come to pass this year!
As you GO AGAIN, I pray you’d know his grace and his peace.
